SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – For the next few days, dozens of Western Massachusetts high school students will head south to visit historic black college campuses.
The students boarded their bus Sunday morning at the Martin Luther King Jr. Family Services in Springfield. It’s a time honored tradition for minority students to consider going to an all-black college in the South.
Ronn Johnson, executive director of MLK Family Services, said “We are going as far as Hampton, Virginia so they’ll make it to Hampton, Virginia, they’ll go to Howard University, they’ll go to Jayne State, Lincoln, Morgan State. It’s a wonderful opportunity for the people to have an experience that’s away from Springfield, to see life can be like in a historical black college campus.”
The week-long college campus tour concludes on Friday. The trip will have taken them to black colleges located as far south as Atlanta.
