NATICK, Mass. (WWLP) – Hundreds of thousands of spectators will line the route and 30,000 runners will take part in the Boston Marathon on Monday.

Security and safety are  the prime concern in an event of this magnitude, even more so since the twin bombing attacks at the marathon in 2013.

For the eight  communities that the Boston Marathon passes thru like Natick, preparation and planning begin way in advance.

Lt. Cara Ross-Cafarelli, Operations Commander for the Natick Police Department told 22News that the initial meetings for the next year’s marathon, takes place the previous November and in January, actual exercises begin for potential scenarios, such as weather, natural disasters, or attacks that could occur during the marathon.

Along the 26.2 mile route people can expect a strong police presence with both uniformed and plain clothed officers.

There’s a long list of items that spectators are discouraged from having along the race route, including backpacks, coolers, weapons and drones. People attending are also advised to carry personal items in clear plastic bags.
