NANTUCKET, Mass. (AP) — Authorities say an 83-year-old Nantucket man has died after he was found chest-deep in mud and suffering from hypothermia less than 24 hours after he was reported missing.

Police say Thomas Larabee Sr. was found Saturday afternoon by a retired firefighter in a marshy area near Hummock Pond on Nantucket.

Larabee was taken to Nantucket Cottage Hospital, where he died.

Larabee’s son told The Boston Globe that his father is a collector of Native American artifacts and was likely searching for arrowheads when he got stuck in the mud.

His family had reported him missing Friday evening. He was last seen walking his two springer spaniels. The dogs were found alive with him.

Larabee was a cranberry grower for 65 years at the Nantucket Conservation Foundation.
