Russian warplanes simulated attack near U.S. Navy ship

The plane didn't appear to be armed, but did fly dangerously close to the U.S. Navy destroyer.

WASHINGTON (WWLP) – United States officials say Russian warplanes flew dangerously close to a U.S. Navy destroyer in the Baltic Sea this week.

The U.S. Navy released video of some of the dozens of close approaches Monday and Tuesday by Russian attack jets and helicopters.

The jets aggressively swoop in over the deck, simulating a maneuver that would be used in an attack. The U.S. Navy said that the Russian planes created a “wake in the water,” because they flew so close, but the plane did appear to be unarmed.

The ship took no action, but did try to radio the Russian jets. The ship’s commander called the Russian flights unsafe and unprofessional.

This isn’t the first time this has happened, but it is the first time this has happened like this.

Just last October, two U.S. Navy jets intercepted a pair of Russian planes flying near a U.S. ship in the Pacific Ocean. Four months earlier a Russian jet buzzed by a U.S. destroyer in the Black Sea.
