Mayor Sarno toured the 40-acre CRRC property

100-million dollar rail car manufacturing plant in East Springfield

China-based CRRC is in the process of building a $95 million railway car factory at the site of the former Westinghouse plant on Page Boulevard in Springfield.

Springfield, Mass. (WWLP) – Construction continues for a nearly $100-million rail car manufacturing plant in East Springfield. Thursday Mayor Domenic Sarno toured the nearly 40-acre CRRC property on Page Boulevard alongside the company’s chairman from China.

The facility is expected to be completed by 2017. Mayor Sarno estimates anywhere from 150 to 200 manufacturing jobs will be created and told 22News the economic impact doesn’t stop there.

“We have room here for expansion. Because if they continue to get these contracts, across the united states and north America, the base of operations could be right here in the city of Springfield”

CRRC is under contract to design and manufacture nearly 300 MBTA trains for Boston. The company is also in contract talks with other cities including New York, Chicago and Atlanta.
