Belchertown students and parents upset over planned budget cuts

Teachers and staff could also be cut

BELCHERTOWN, Mass. (WWLP) – More than 150 people filled the auditorium for Tuesday night’s Belchertown School Committee meeting at the Chestnut Hill Community School.

5th and 6th grade band are among the programs that could be cut. Parents worry they’ll do away with band in all grades, impacting students’ futures.

Tammy Thornton of Belchertown told 22News, “A lot of these kids go off to college, big colleges, on scholarships and stuff because they’re good. It’s not going to happen. These kids are not going to get their dreams.”

Under the 2017 proposed Belchertown School Budget, 6 to 7 teaching positions could be cut, as well as Junior Varsity sports, 5th and 6th grade band, and additional staff.
