SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield Police are investigating a shooting on Plainfield Street, Thursday night, after a 15-year-old girl was shot.
Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News, around 8:00 p.m., the department received a 911 call of a shooting at an apartment on Plainfield Street. When officers arrived, they found a 15-year-old girl with a gunshot wound.
EMT’s provided life saving first aid and then rushed the teen to Baystate Medical Center. Sgt. Delaney said had been in serious but stable condition, but died Friday morning.
Sgt. Delaney said detectives discovered that a “friend” of the victim, a juvenile male, was inside the home “playing around” with a firearm. The gun discharged and hit the 15-year-old. Delaney said there were other children in the apartment when the gun went off, and also reportedly at least one adult, but on another floor.
The suspected shooter ran away before the police arrived. Sgt. Delaney said no one has been arrested at this time. This is an ongoing investigation by detectives from the Major Crime Unit.
