Greenfield Fire Captain John Whitney told 22News that two people were living inside these apartments at the time of the fire, one upstairs and one downstairs. He said both went to the hospital as a precaution, but believes there were no major injuries.

22News spoke to the man living on the bottom floor apartment. He described waking up to the sounds of a smoke detector and saw and felt debris falling from the ceiling.  He was very upset but said we was grateful to have made it out safely.

The apartments are located on Pierce Street, just off of Federal Street (Route 5) in Greenfield.

This morning the street is open to all traffic, but a fire truck is still parked out there, so you will need to slow down a bit to get around the area.

Representatives from the state fire marshal’s office were sifting through debris inside the top floor aparment to try and find out waht caused the fire.
