HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Police say one man is dead after a drug deal erupted in gunfire in the parking lot of a Hartford Walmart.

Investigators say one man was trying to buy marijuana from another when both pulled weapons and fired at about 6 p.m. on Monday.

The 34-year-old victim, who is from New Britain, was shot three times in the abdomen. His name has not been released.

Deputy Chief Brian Foley identified the alleged shooter as 26-year-old Kenneth Reid, of Windsor.

Reid, who turned himself in a few hours after the shooting, is scheduled to face a judge on Tuesday on a murder charge.

Reid told investigators he shot in self-defense after the other man tried to rob him. It’s not clear if he has a lawyer.
