Irish flag hoisted above Court Square for St. Patrick’s Day

Parade committee organizes annual St. Patrick's Day event

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A St. Patrick’s Day tradition continued in Springfield Thursday morning, as the Irish flag was raised outside City Hall.

The event, organized by the Springfield St. Patrick’s Parade Committee, featured the Colleens, who will be marching in this weekend’s parade in Holyoke. Mayor Domenic Sarno officiated at this very happy event, celebrating the heritage of one of the largest ethnic groups in the city.

85 year old James Sullivan summed up best the meaning to him of Irish heritage.

“Irish heritage is important to us, our faith and heritage, to a lot of people, it makes America- this is what America is all about. And they instill in us the great love of the Irish heritage,” Sullivan said.

The sound of bagpipes could be heard as the flag was hoisted up the pole in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, and the contributions of Irish Americans to the greater Springfield area.

And on St. Patrick’s Day in Springfield whether you’re Irish or yearn to the Irish, the wearing of the green remained a cherished tradition.
