East Longmeadow appoints new police chief during crowded, noisy meeting

EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) – After months of reviewing applicants and quite a bit of controversy, the next East Longmeadow Police Chief has been chosen.

East Longmeadow Police Sgt. Jeffrey Dalessio is the newly appointed chief, announced at a noisy meeting in town Wednesday night.

An appointed search committee began with more than a dozen applicants— the committee narrowed it down to three candidates, but two out of the remaining three dropped out of the race.

Sgt. Dalessio was the last candidate standing. Before that, the committee recommended the town reinstate Police Chief Doug Mellis as “acting chief” so they could start the process over to stay, “fair.” The select board, however, overruled the committee.

East Longmeadow Selectman William Gorman said will negotiate Dalessio’s contract, and said if an agreement can’t be reached, he reserves the sole right to pick the chief.

Also during Wednesday’s meeting– it was approved to offer interim town manager Gregg Neffinger a three year contract to officially continue in that position.
