Springfield Police arrest armed 16-year-old overnight

The name of the suspect is not being released.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield Police were patrolling an area of the city where businesses have had recent break-ins when they came across a young man pulling on door handles.

Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News officers approached the 16-year-old on Dwight Street around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday and noticed he was trying to hide something on his left side.

Sgt. Delaney said officers performed a pat-frisk on him and found out that he had a loaded .22 semi-automatic handgun and some cocaine.

He is being charged with:

  • carrying a firearm
  • possession of a large capacity clip
  • possession of crack cocaine.

The teenage suspect’s name will not be released due to his age. Sgt. Delaney said he is scheduled to see a judge in juvenile court Tuesday.
