MassDOT working to protect pedestrians in Springfield

Construction wouldn't begin until at least 2018

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – MassDOT told 22News Tuesday night that they’re working on a $4-million project to boost safety near the train tracks near Birnie Avenue.

22News had our camera’s rolling Tuesday night when people snuck through a hole in the fence and crossed the tracks. It’s a serious safety hazard.

The state said it wants to build an underpass so people can safely get from one section of the city to another. The project would be federally funded.

Construction wouldn’t begin until at least 2018.
