Hockey teams play to benefit child cancer patients

Event raises money for Baystate Medical Center's Sadowsky Center for Children

EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Hockey teams took to the ice Saturday in Easthampton to benefit children who’ve been stricken with cancer.

The Ed Chmura memorial hockey event raises money for Baystate Medical Center’s Sadowsky Center for Children. It’s the start of a two day fundraising effort that began at the Wiliston Northampton school hockey rink in Easthampton years ago.

Alan Chadel, the event organizer, told 22News: “we got started about eight years ago. The rink manager had passed away from cancer so we wanted to do something in his honor. So we started this team shield of hope.”

This weekend’s hockey event has partnered with Katelynn’s ride, a springtime fundraiser in honor of Katelynn Battista, an 11 year old cancer victim who died in 2001.
