SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Construction on MGM’s resort casino continues in Springfield’s South End, with many residents eager for the finished product.
“I’m looking forward to it, because I think it will bring a lot of jobs, and I think a lot of people will enjoy it as well,” Ana Marie Padro said.

Neighboring states, meanwhile, continue to push for their own new casinos to compete with MGM once its up and running here in Springfield. Just this week, Rhode Island approved putting a casino proposal on the November ballot. Similar proposals in Connecticut have been in the works for several months.
Despite the outside threats, Springfield City Councilor Tom Ashe says he is confident the project MGM Springfield is putting forward will be enough to face any of the surrounding competition.
“The international brand that we have in MGM is a bona fide threat, which it is. I think that’s why the mayor and city council took great pains in going through the fine details to make sure that we have a world class destination, and not some gaming facility,” Ashe said.
The proposed site for the Rhode Island casino in Tiverton is roughly a 45 minute drive from Plainridge Park casino in Plainville, Massachusetts. It is just under a two-hour drive from the MGM Springfield site.
