Lone survivor of shooting that killed two journalists returns to work

She is working part time.

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE (WSLS 10) –  The lone survivor of a shooting at Smith Mountain Lake that claimed the lives of two local journalists last summer has returned to work.

Several surgeries and months of recovery later, Vicki Gardner has been back part-time as the Executive Director of the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce for one month now.

With more than 90 events planned for the SML’s 50th anniversary, Gardner said she could not have picked a better time to return.

Gardner said she is working to give back to her community in the same way it gave back to her.

“When this tragedy happened, there were a lot of generous and wonderful people that just wanted to help,” Gardner said. “And they wrote checks. And I thought ‘This would be perfect to apply towards the beginnings of a community center’ and they named it. I did not, they named it Vicki’s Vision.”

Gardner said while she was recovering, her staff picked up right where she left off, ensuring things would be running smoothly when she came back to work.
