What is a leap year?

Adding an extra day helps to balance out the calendar due to the rotation of the Earth

Leaping Forward: Ready For Spring

EAST LONGMEADOW,  Mass. (WWLP) – Adding an extra day every four years helps keep our calendars in compliance with reality. We generally accept that one year is 365 days, but it actually takes the earth 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 45 seconds to circle the sun.

So, every four years, we add a day to the month of February to catch up. This gives us an extra 24 hours to do whatever we want.

Betsy Fernandes, from Monson, spent her day doing yoga, “Spending an extra day of the year maybe doing something you want to do if you don’t have to work on that day, some chores around the house, spring cleaning, maybe some painting.”

February is the shortest month of the year, so it makes sense to add an extra day to that month Even with the “leap day,” at 29 days, its still the shortest month.

Of course your extra day can be used however you like.
