SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) – For these kids, it wasn’t about competition, it was about having fun.
22News found smiling faces everywhere. It was a day where their disability didn’t matter. From basketball to bowling, these students were happy to participate and make new friends.
Many of those friends included best buddies of South Hadley volunteers from the high school’s basketball team. They told 22News how happy it made them to be a part of this day.
Sophie Gatzounas of South Hadley High School said, “It’s not competitive at all. Everyone is here just to have fun. These kids love it. They absolutely love it. We cheer for them as they come in. They have smiles on their faces. It’s just a great experience and a great time.”
There were about 65 student athletes and 50 volunteers at Friday’s games, which are held three times a year. This is the 5th year that South Hadley has hosted the Special Olympics and it’s grown. They’ve had to move it from the middle school to the high school.
