Sections of the parks near the Westfield River closed

The closure is a precaution

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Barrels and temporary fencing have been installed at the northern and southern edges of the park overlooks on the banks of the Westfield River, in between the two bridges.

According to Westfield Director of Public Works David Billips, a construction contractor that was working on the bike path, hit one of the overlooks with a cable. That caused part of it to loosen and give way.

The city decided to close the overlooks out of an abundance of caution, especially with the Westfield River running so high after the rain earlier this week.

Billips said structural engineers will be coming out to inspect the overlooks next week.
