AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine officials are warning the public about a scheme involving a company claiming to return unclaimed property from a sweepstakes prize.
Maine Treasurer Terry Hayes said in a news release that the letters, which are mailed from a Massachusetts address, are fraudulent.
The letters tell recipients that unclaimed sweepstakes are listed under their name.
The letters claim to be from National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators, a legitimate nonprofit organization that assists states in returning unclaimed property to its rightful owners.
The letters, however, are not from any reputable unclaimed property organization, Hayes said. She said people who receive the notice should not respond in any way.
