SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Republican presidential candidate John Kasich will be in western Massachusetts this weekend, just two days ahead of the state’s presidential primary. The Ohio governor will hold a town hall meeting at the MassMutual Center Sunday afternoon.
Kasich faces a difficult fight in Massachusetts, where he has been the only Republican candidate airing television ads. A poll released Friday morning by Boston radio station WBUR shows him tied with Florida Senator Marco Rubio for second place in Massachusetts, with each drawing support of about 19% of likely primary voters. Businessman Donald Trump maintains a commanding lead in the state, with 40% support.
Doors to the MassMutual Center will open at 2:30 P.M. with the Kasich rally beginning at 3:00. Those interested in attending are encouraged to sign up online through Eventbrite.
Kasich is the third presidential candidate to visit western Massachusetts in this election cycle, and the first Republican candidate to do so. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has held one rally in Springfield and two rallies in Amherst since last fall, while Hillary Clinton held a fundraiser in Holyoke. Donald Trump has also campaigned in Massachusetts, however not in the western part of the state- having held rallies in Worcester and Lowell.
The Massachusetts presidential primary is being held on Tuesday, March 1.
