FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — Viewer photos and video clips of the massive mill fire in Fall River poured into the Eyewitness News newsroom Saturday.
The blaze broke out on Weaver Street at about 3:30 a.m. – and our viewers captured some great shots of the glow that illuminated the sky in the pre-dawn hours.
The fire could be seen for miles across the Taunton River in Somerset.
“The whole place was aglow,” said Michael Sildia, who lives nearby. “From one side of the roof to the other, it was totally engulfed.”
As the flames raged, the structure collapsed and crews continued spraying it down with water.
“At first, I thought it was an explosion or something, and I said, ‘no, it sounds like something fell,’” neighbor Greg Moniz said.
People who live near the site of the fire came from blocks away to see what the commotion was about – many saying they were woken from their sleep by the fire.
“I saw the flames shoot right up into the sky,” Moniz said. “And I could actually see the guy on the aerial ladder shooting the hose on it.”
Witnesses sent us photos via ReportIt! of the building completely involved – with a wall of flames and the roof and walls collapsed inward.
Fire officials said the flames were suspicious, but no injuries were reported. Crews will likely be at the scene for days, according to officials.
Many people said they were sad to see the mill destroyed because it was a piece of the city’s history that is now lost.
