The “X” dangerous for drivers and pedestrians alike

76,000 pedestrians were injured in traffic crashes in 2012

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A dangerous intersection in Springfield known as the “X” puts pedestrians at risk while trying to cross the street.

Residents told 22News the city needs to do more to keep pedestrians safe.

Springfield and Chicopee had two pedestrian accidents within a period of 12 hours this week. One of the victims was seriously hurt.

The intersection known as the “X” is where Sumner Ave, Dickinson Street and Belmont Ave. meet. 22News observed cars making illegal turns, running lights and speeding, making this intersection even more dangerous for pedestrians.

On the other hand, 22News observed pedestrians not using the crosswalk while crossing the street. One woman 22News talked to said the city should have crosswalks at every street in the intersection.

Residents have long complained about the heavy traffic, illegal U-turns and lane confusion at the “X.”

City leaders are currently planning to redesign the “X” to make it safer for cars, pedestrians and bicyclists.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 76,000 pedestrians were injured in traffic crashes in 2012.
