Holey Moses Ice Fishing Derby surprised by springlike temperatures

The weather kept down the attendance on Russell pond for the 4th annual "Holey Moses Ice Fishing Derby"

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – When organizers in the Hampden county hilltown of Russell scheduled their annual fishing derby, they never counted on Saturdays springlike temperatures.

The weather obviously kept down the attendance on Russell pond for the 4th annual “Holey Moses Ice Fishing Derby”. It’s so named because all the proceeds go towards the Horace A. Moses Boy Scout camp in Russell.

Fisherman John Decker approached the pond very cautiously and said, “Ya I’m really surprised actually. I woke up, we grabbed our fishing poles and wanted to go fishing, we didn’t think the lake would still be frozen. Are you surprised to see people out here today? Not really it’s so nice.

The arctic conditions of a week ago obviously provided enough frost to keep Russell Pond safe for the ice fishermen to spend their day catching fish for a good cause.
