SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – New lane closures in Springfield for the Interstate 91 reconstruction project started Tuesday. The closures are expected to continue for two to three weeks, depending upon the weather.
Starting Tuesday, a single lane closure is planned intermittently on East Columbus Avenue and Hall of Fame (West Columbus) Avenue, as well as on connecting streets.
Signage has been posted to direct traffic around the lane closures, but there are no detour routes. 22News spoke with some drivers who say they just avoid the area entirely.
“No, it’s a bear to go there, there’s too much traffic. I would never go there,” Jennifer Martinez of Springfield said.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation encourages drivers to look for alternate routes. That includes taking Route 5, because there could be more time added to your commute.
These closures are required for the contractor to perform utility and other short-duration work on city streets.
