SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – We’ve had an incredible difference in valley temperatures compared to temperatures in the hills outside of the valley. At 11am temperatures in places like Brimfield, Wilbraham and Ware were in the upper 40s and low 50s, whereas Chicopee was still in the low 30s.
Luckily the colder temperatures will quickly be replaced by the milder air as we go through the afternoon. What was a slow warmup into the low 30s for most will be instead a very sudden jump in temperatures this afternoon as the 40s and possibly 50s arrive in the Pioneer Valley.
There will be some colder neighborhoods that don’t quite get the warmer air in time, for those areas in the upper Pioneer Valley you will struggle to reach the 40s this afternoon. But for most of the highly populated areas in greater Springfield you’ll get well into the 40s and perhaps low 50s as the warmer air mixes out the cold.
Along with the warmer air will come very wet weather. Rain, heavy at times, along with gusty winds and possibly even a thunderstorm will push in through the afternoon before rain wraps up by 8pm this evening.
About 1″ of rain could fall in a short period of time this afternoon, bringing the concern for some minor street flooding where rain and melted snow could fill area drains.
