Audits on Springfield PD’s evidence inventory process

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Two audits have been completed on the Springfield Police Department’s narcotics and cash evidence inventory.

The audits come after retired officer Kevin Burnham was charged last month with stealing more than $385,000 from the police evidence room. According to the Mayor’s Office, all of the narcotics evidence was accounted for.

After his appointment in 2014, Police Commissioner John Barbieri ordered that evidence procedures be reviewed by the City’s Office of Internal Audit. A second independent audit was also conducted by the Marcum Advisory Group.
