Obama wants new oil tax to pay for clean transportation

Would create a $10 per barrel tax on crude oil

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – President Obama is proposing a $10 tax to oil companies for every barrel of oil purchased. The president wants the tax revenue to fund investments in clean transportation.

The proposal is expected to be dead-on-arrival in the Republican-controlled Congress, which openly opposes new taxes and Obama’s energy policies.

The White House is hoping to motivate energy producers to fund clean energy. Bruce Balchunas of Westfield told 22News that he agrees with trying to make more “green” improvements.

“Clean burning cars, clean burning energy is the direction we have to go in eventually, because of all the toxic waste we have around, all the fumes, you know, killing the atmosphere,” Balchunas said.

The White House says that the tax would add $20 billion per year in funding designed to reduce traffic and create new modes of transportation.
