SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – You might have already noticed some closures in downtown Springfield on Monday.
Crews closed one lane on State Street and Boland Way, underneath I-91, between East and West Columbus Avenue. Both roads are now back open, but other road closures will be in place on Wednesday.
It’s all part of the I-91 reconstruction project in Springfield. Crews are preparing to demolish the decking on the elevated portion of the highway.
Drivers told 22News they just want this project finished as quickly as possible. Michael Dumont of Easthampton said, “Is this going to be one of these jobs that gets stretched out over a 4-year period or will it be done more quickly than that? Because I think it really does affect local people trying to get back and forth from work.”
On Wednesday, crews will close one lane on both East and West Columbus Avenues, between Clinton Street and Liberty Street. That’ll be in effect from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
MassDOT said they’ll start the demolition work on Wednesday.
