SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A reminder Monday night from emergency crews who are urging you to clear a pathway to and from your home.
22News spoke with the American Medical Response branch in Springfield. They told us every winter, they respond to emergency calls only to find the homeowner never shoveled the walkway to the front door. They said the extra time it takes to get in, and out of a home can be a matter of life and death.
“Seconds and minutes are precious, especially for someone who might be deteriorating. We have a lot of equipment and we need to get that in quickly to start work,” said Mike Harrowfield, operations manager at Springfield AMR.
Harrowfield said the pathway should be at least three feet wide so a stretcher can fit. He also recommends you use snow melt so the pathway isn’t icy, ensuring your safety and theirs.
Harrowfield also told 22News it’s important to remember to clear the snow around fire hydrants, to make sure fire crews have easy access in case of a fire.
