SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – in Springfield, the city was choosing who will represent them as their colleen in this year’s parade.
It’s a rigorous selection process, but these young women told 22News they’ve dreamt since they were young of representing their community and their heritage.
On January 2nd, Springfield’s Parade Committee whiddled down a field of young women to just five finalists.
On Saturday night, they chose their colleen, and 22News was there as she was crowned.
The family of gunnery sergeant Thomas Sullivan was also honored their Saturday night who are now the honorary marshalls in replace of the deceased Sullivan.
The brother and sister told 22News what that honor means to the family. “It’s a great honor we’d like to thank Kerry Sullivan and the Mayor and everyone in the Springfield parade committee for bestowing this honor on my brother,” said Joseph Sullivan and Dianne Sullivan-Caron.
The ladies who were not chosen as the colleen will still occupy a place of honor by her side on the float as part of the colleen’s court.
