Research: Text alerts help patients remember to take medication

Missed medications can be tough on the body

AUSTRALIA (WIVB) — Doctors think they’ve come up with a way to make sure you don’t forget your pills. They’re sending text alerts!

It’s a reminder they’re calling “A Text a Day to Keep the Doctor Away.” It’s especially important for people who have chronic diseases. The missed medications can be tough on the body.

There’s some science behind the texts. Researchers in Australia found the texts can double the odds that a patient will take their medicine. The lead scientists on the study say that about half of patients with life-long diseases often skip their medications.

American researchers looked into this last year. They found texts helped patients deal with blood pressure and heart disease. But how many texts will be too much? The next step may be a text app to help doctors send all of these.
