CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – What a mistake Hollywood made during its golden age of westerns, intentionally downplaying the role of frontier women.

The feminist western has finally come of age with “Jane Got A Gun.”

Natalie Portman embodies all of the grit and determination that only men were allowed to have in the old male dominated westerns. The creative casting also sets this moody western apart from the more conventional sagebrush adventures.

The great Joel Edgerton can play any role to perfection. He’s a gunslinger who was Jane’s long-ago lover. She now needs him to help protect her family from a band of murderous outlaws.

Other than over doing too many flashbacks to put her problems in perspective, “Jane Got A Gun” is a rock solid western adventure.

The film distinguishes itself by allowing Portman’s character the emotional range hardly ever permitted women during the sexist westerns of yesteryear.

Let’s just say “Jane Got A Gun” uses the new found freedom of expression to enhance our appreciation of frontier life. From the off-beat casting to the uncompromising gritty realism, “Jane Got A Gun” deserves every one of its hard earned 3 stars.

So saddle up and hit the trail to where you’ll find this remarkable character that Natalie Portman portrays so flawlessly.
