SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A favorite son returned home to Springfield Saturday to speak at the Alden Baptist Church men’s prayer breakfast, during this first week of Black History Month.
Springfield native Roderick Ireland is a retired chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.
Saturday’s was the fourth annual prayer breakfast at the predominantly African-American church.
Chief Justice Ireland told 22News the advice he gives to young people in the minority community. “My advice is to get as much education as possible, and don’t listen to the naysayers. If people are telling you what you can’t do, don’t buy into that. Focus on what you want to do, and what your goals are.
As for race relations in 21st century America, Ireland said unfortunately race is still a factor. There’s been progress, but we still have quite a way to go.
