CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – It took State Police and emergency responders just over an hour to clear a two-car crash that backed up traffic on I-91 North, just south of the infamous Chicopee Curve Friday night. Two people were hurt in the accident; a woman and a child.
Springfield Fire spokesman Dennis Leger told 22News rescue personnel had to use hydraulic tools to free one of the victims from the wreckage. An unidentified woman suffered a back injury. A child in the same vehicle had suffered a broken leg. Both were rushed to the hospital by ambulance.
22News received several phone calls from drivers who were unable to move forward. They said they saw numerous police cruisers and fire trucks near the I-91/I-391 split in Chicopee.
According to the State Police attached to the Springfield Barracks, the crash on I-91 North was located right before Exit 12. The accident took up the two right-hand lanes of I-91 North. The cars collided at 6:25 p.m. Friday, and traffic was moving smoothly again by 7:30 p.m.
