NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – If you are a business owner, next weekend gives you a reason to celebrate.
Love is in the air. Northampton’s vibrant downtown is already getting ready for a big extended weekend expected to boost business and keep registers ringing.
“A very very very busy weekend,” said Debra Flynn, the owner of Eastside Grill in Northampton. “There is going to be lots to do and see and it will spill out to all the retailers and restaurants, it will just be a fun weekend.”
This year, Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday. The following Monday is President’s Day, giving lovers an opportunity for an extended weekend getaway. Restaurants are not the only ones who will be getting a boost from the big Valentine’s Day weekend. The Hotel Northampton told 22News they are booking up fast and they have special packages available for couples. Including champagne, chocolate dipped strawberries and a meal at Wiggins Tavern.
Next Friday is also Arts Night Out, and Northampton’s Annual Ice Art Festival where 10 ice sculptures will take shape throughout the downtown.
“I wish it were better publicized to tell you the truth because I wasn’t aware that there were so many activities planned for next weekend, and the fact that there are is just great. It’s great to get more people downtown,” said Rosemary Tarantino of Northampton.
The owner of the Sierra Grill told 22News they’ll be taking reservations right up to the last minute.
“This is a lot of parties of two,” said O’Brian Tomalin. “It does get kind of hectic. Day of, our phone still rings off the hook from predominately males, if we have anything available.”
The Sierra Grill told 22News business is up about 5% from this time last year, when the economy was weaker and a brutal winter was keeping people inside.
