Construction of Springfield subway car factory on track to begin soon

$95 million facility to build cars for Boston's MBTA

China-based CRRC is in the process of building a $95 million railway car factory at the site of the former Westinghouse plant on Page Boulevard in Springfield.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Major work should begin soon on the construction of a new factory in Springfield that will build subway cars for Boston’s transit system. Springfield Chief Development Officer Kevin Kennedy told 22News that construction on CRRC’s Page Boulevard plant should begin by March or April.

The $95 million facility will produce some 284 Red Line and Orange Line cars for the MBTA. An estimated 100 jobs are expected to be created once construction is up and running, with 150 positions to be filled in the factory itself.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the facility was held back in September. It is located at the former Westinghouse plant- a site that has been vacant for decades.
