CDC to young women: Don’t drink if you aren’t using contraception

Estimated 3 million young women drinking and having sex without contraception

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A new report looks at the number of women who unknowingly could be exposing developing babies to alcohol use.

The Centers for Disease Control estimates that slightly more than 3 million women have a lifestyle that includes drinking alcohol and engaging in sexual activity without using birth control. The CDC has issued a warning to young women not to drink any alcohol unless they are using contraception.

Some say that the CDC recommendations are taking things a little too far, however.

“I think it is a little extreme,” Julia Lavigne of Chicopee said. “I think every aspect you should be protecting yourself. You should be responsibly drinking. You should also be responsible and use contraceptives if you are having sex.”

About half of all pregnancies in the United States are unplanned, and many women who become pregnant are not aware of it for about a month.
