Springfield schoolchildren receive winter coats through “Operation Warm”

Coats distributed Friday at Mary O. Pottenger Elementary School in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Students at the Mary O. Pottenger Elementary School in Springfield got a big surprise Friday, when firefighters showed up with free winter coats for the whole school.

The Statewide Union, Professional Firefighters of Massachusetts, partnered with “Operation Warm” to provide the coats. More than 2,000 children in Springfield and in parts of eastern Massachusetts will receive jackets.

“I’m very happy and thankful for my coat, and it feels really special, because I’m getting a nice coat from the wonderful people,” third grader Joel Soto said.

The coats that were distributed in Springfield Friday were 100% American-made.
