Massachusetts gets a new state fire marshal

The fire marshal oversees fire, explosive and hazardous materials investigations

STOW, Mass. (AP) — The state’s deputy fire marshal is getting a promotion.

The state Fire Service Commission on Wednesday selected Deputy Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey to take over for Fire Marshal Stephen Coan, who is retiring after 20 years on the job.

Commission chairman Everett Fire Chief David Butler said Ostroskey stood out in a field of extremely talented and qualified candidates and is the right person to carry on Coan’s vision for firefighter training, public protection and education, and code enforcement.

Ostroskey has had a 30-year career in fire services, and was the fire chief in Uxbridge before joining the Department of Fire Services in 2012. He called his promotion an honor.

The fire marshal oversees fire, explosive and hazardous materials investigations, the state firefighting academy and fire safety.
