Belchertown fishing derby cancelled due to thin ice

Ice on Lake Metacomet is only about 3" thick

The ice on Lake Metacomet in Belchertown is simply not thick enough for organizers to hold their 21st annual ice fishing derby.

BELCHERTOWN, Mass. (WWLP) – It has been so mild this winter that Belchertown’s annual fishing derby on Lake Metacomet had to be cancelled, because of thin ice.

Organizer Sean Gallagher cancelled the 21st annual event when he tested the ice thickness at three inches. It would safely need to be about 8 to 10” thick.

“As soon as Christmas rolled around and we didn’t have any ice to speak of, we started to get concerned. And then up until two weeks ago we were still hopeful. At that point, we had to cancel the derby, unfortunately, due to lack of ice,” Gallagher said.

For the past 20 years, the ice fishing derby has been his organization’s biggest fundraiser. The money they raise goes toward cleaning up Lake Metacomet, and the nearby boat ramps.
