More than $20K worth of heroin seized in Pittsfield

PITTSFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Three people from Pittsfield were arrested this week on drug charges.

According to the Massachusetts State Police, around 6:00 p.m. Thursday, troopers from the State Police Troop B CAT Team were patrolling on South Street in Pittsfield when they saw a blue Honda Sedan heading north with a defective brake light.

The Honda started to speed up when the troopers began to follow them, state police said, but then eventually stopped several hundred yards down the street.

During their investigation, State Police said the troopers found about 10 packets of heroin on the driver, Joseph Walker, and 500 packets of heroin inside the car, which Walker owned. The second suspect, Derrick Laforest, had about $1,640 in cash. In total, the troopers seized $20,200 worth of heroin.

42-year-old Walker, 33-year-old Laforest, and a young woman, who was sitting in the back seat with Laforest, were arrested and booked at the Cheshire Barracks. State Police said during booking, Laforest allegedly threatened the booking trooper, repeatedly.

Laforest was charged with the following:

  • Possession with Intent to Distribute a Class A Substance (Heroin)
  • Trafficking in Heroin
  • Conspiracy to Violate Drug Law
  • Witness Intimidation

Walker was charged with the following:

  • Possession with Intent to Distribute a Class A Substance (Heroin), subsequent offense
  • Trafficking in Heroin
  • Conspiracy to Violate Drug Law
  • Brake Light Violation

The young woman, considered a juvenile, was charged with the following:

  • Trafficking in Heroin
  • Conspiracy to Violate Drug Laws

State Police said bail for Laforest was set at $100,000, for Walker it was set at $50,000 and for the juvenile it was set at $5,000. Laforest and Walker were taken to the Berkshire House of Correction, and the juvenile was taken to the alternative lockup program in Springfield, pending their arraignment.
