Record-breaking Powerball jackpot reaches $800 million

Massachusetts State Lottery has sold more than $30 million worth in Powerball tickets over the last 18 consecutive no-winner drawings.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Just one day before the wildly anticipated Powerball drawing Saturday night, the jackpot has risen to $800 million with a cash option of $496 million.

The jackpot already broke the record for being the largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history earlier this week after no one won during Wednesday’s drawing. That makes it 18 consecutive drawings with no top prize winner, sending many people to local gas stations and convenience stores to buy their chance at millions.

According to the Massachusetts State Lottery, over the course of the last 18 drawings, they have sold more than $30 million in Powerball tickets.

People can buy Powerball tickets for $2 each in 44 states until 9:45 p.m. Saturday night. The drawing is scheduled for 10:59 p.m.

The estimated $800 million Powerball jackpot breaks the previous record of the Mega Millions’  $656 million jackpot won in 2012.
