People are throwing away their money on Powerball

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) –  The Powerball Jackpot is at $800 million Friday and could get even higher before Saturday night’s drawing. 22News discovered why so many people are throwing away their money.

We’re not talking about buying a ticket and the chances you have to win.  We’re talking about actually winning money in the Powerball and not cashing it in.

When no one wins the jackpot, Powerball still pays out millions of dollars.   Prizes range from $4 to $2 million.  Brett Jacobson, founder of lottolotto, an app that will let you know if you win any money in the lottery told 22News Powerball paid out around $65 million on Wednesday and about $13 million of that will never be cashed in.

“They look and see whether or not the jackpot went up and if the jackpot went up they okay well I didn’t win and therefore don’t bother to check their tickets,” said Jacobson.
In Massachusetts you have one year to claim a Powerball prize.  If you cash it in after that, even if you win, you won’t get your money.

Jacobson told 22News he is relaunching his free app, lottolotto in February. Here’s how it works, you take a picture of your lottery ticket on your phone, the app will then notify you if your a winner.
