HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Golden Glove Boxing has returned to the Holyoke Boys and Girls Club for the first time in years. The bell rings at 7pm Fiday and Saturday evening for the preliminary bouts in the New England Golden Gloves competition.
The finals in February will be held at the MassMutual Center in Springfield. For 50 years, the Boys and Girls Club had been where many famous New England boxers had gotten their start. The Golden Gloves competition has been credited with having a positive influence on teenagers.
Dean Fay “When these kids get to a certain age, usually that impressionable age of 15, that’s when they start to come into themselves,” Dean Fay of the New England Golden Gloves told 22News, adding that they’ve “been a staple here at the Boys and Girls Club for 50 years.” Some Golden Gloves trivia for you: Mike Tyson got his start at the Holyoke Boys Club, knocking out his opponent in the 1983 Golden Gloves, when he was just 16 years old.
