East Windsor casino would be less than 30 mins from Springfield

Casinos in Windsor Locks, Hartford and East Hartford have also been proposed

EAST WINDSOR, Conn. (WWLP) – The East Windsor Board of Selectmen met Tuesday night to discuss the location they’re proposing for a third Connecticut casino.

The tribes that run Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Casino have united to create a third tribal casino that would directly compete with MGM Springfield. If they win legislative approval from the state, the two tribes intend to open their casino before MGM Springfield opens in 2018.

There were two different locations people thought they may see that satellite casino in East Windsor; the former movie theater and the former Walmart building, but the town said Tuesday they have a different location in mind.

The location that developers have proposed is an almost empty lot. It’s only about 20 minutes from Springfield.

According to East Windsor First Selectman Robert Maynard, “By choosing East Windsor as a location, the casinos have shown the importance of our Route 5, Route 91 corridor that has two exits into East Windsor.”

Andy Heath of East Windsor told 22News he’d still have a reason to drive to Springfield; “I see the casino here in East Windsor, or wherever it’s going to be in Connecticut, as less an event kind of a place rather than see a show or that kind of thing; which I understand is going to be up in Springfield.”

The Town of East Windsor will hold a vote before they submit a final proposal. The tribes are also considering proposals in Hartford, East Hartford and Windsor Locks.

The tribes are expected to make a decision by February.
