CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – 22News needs your help saving lives. This is the time to give. During the holidays, regular donors may be busy or on vacation, but the need for blood is always there.
That’s why we’re partnering with the Western Massachusetts Red Cross for our annual Blood Drive on Wednesday, from 11:00AM to 6:00PM at our studio at One Broadcast Center in Chicopee. Almost everyone 17 or older, weighing at least 110 pounds, is eligible to donate.
According to Ana Parrelli, the manager of WMass Red Cross donor recruitment, “Generally good health. Most medications are actually okay. A lot of people think if they’re diabetic or high blood pressure, they can’t donate, but they actually can, so as long as people feel good, I know there are a lot of colds going around, so as long as you’re not one of those unfortunate people with a cold, we’d love to see you.”
Other things to note if you plan to donate:
- You do need an identification, like a license, and your blood donor card, if you have one
- Make sure you have had something to eat and are well hydrated
- You can donate if you are 16 years old, but you’ll need a parental consent form
- You don’t need to know your blood type and you don’t need an appointment
From start to finish, it takes just over a half hour to donate a pint of blood, and just that one pint can help save three lives. If you come at a busy time, you may have to wait up to an hour, but you can save time by filling out the questionnaire, and even schedule an appointment online, through the Cross Rapid Pass feature.

The ultimate reward for donating blood is knowing you’re saving lives, but you’ll also be rewarded with a $5 Dunkin Donuts gift card.
