BLANDFORD, Mass. (WWLP) – There is not much snow left on the ground now, but the cold weather has allowed the folks at the Blandford Ski Area to get ready to start their season.
Zach Footit, mountain manager at Blandford, told 22News that they generally have to wait for the temperature to drop to 27 degrees or below to turn on their snowmaking guns. They work by adding air and a snowmaking agent to water, which is shot out of the gun. When the mixture hits the cold air, it crystallizes.
Footit said that the warmth of last month was hard on them, but they are ready to start their season.
“It’s been trying times for us, warm temperatures throughout December. It hasn’t even been like that in any of my distant past, but we did make it through, and we’re going to get some snow out there,” Footit said.
The Blandford Ski Area will open on Saturday, typically they begin their season in late December.
