BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — A suspect in the shooting death of a New York man in the entertainment district of Burlington, Vermont has pleaded not guilty to murder.
Twenty-four-year-old Chavis Murphy was arraigned Monday in the Dec. 27 death of Obafemi Adedapo in Burlington. Murphy is being held without bail pending a Jan. 14 hearing.
Court papers say Adedapo was shot after a dispute at the Zen Lounge over a woman.
Murphy had been extradited to Vermont from Massachusetts last week, after he was captured outside a restaurant on Route 5 in West Springfield.
Police say Adedapo had been arrested 20 times in New York City on charges including robbery and assault. He was known to police there as a member of the Cashford Crips, a gang operating out of Brooklyn.
The Burlington Free Press reports court papers show he has convictions for misdemeanor simple assault and careless and negligent driving.
