Vermont murder suspect arrested in West Springfield

Chavis Murphy wanted for murder of Obefami Adedapo

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A man who allegedly shot and killed another man on a sidewalk in a busy section of Burlington, Vermont was arrested in West Springfield Tuesday night. According to a news release from the Burlington Police Department, 24 year-old Chavis Murphy was arrested without incident outside the Five Guys restaurant on Riverdale Street. The suspect was staying at a nearby hotel.

Murphy was wanted for the murder of 28 year-old Obefami Adedapo early Sunday morning. Police say that Adedapo, a member of a Brooklyn-based branch of the Crips gang, was seen having an argument with another man at a bar on Church Street in Burlington. After Adedapo left the bar, he was shot multiple times, and was found lying on the sidewalk. He was taken to the hospital, but he did not survive.

Burlington police have traveled down to West Springfield to apply for search warrants and collect evidence. He will be extradited to Vermont to face the murder charges at a later date.

Police say that Murphy is a registered sex offender, who has two convictions for felonious lewd and lascivious conduct, as well as one conviction of felony sexual assault, and one conviction for simple assault.
